Joshua’s practice focuses on in-bound and outbound business transactions, with a particular focus on cross-border issues in Mexico, international tax planning and compliance, multinational joint ventures, complex international structures, mergers and acquisitions, contracts, entity planning and formation, business succession planning, wealth planning for high net worth individuals, international estate planning and a wide range of domestic and transactional tax and corporate matters. Joshua also represents taxpayers in tax controversy matters, before the Internal Revenue Service in administrative appeals and before the United States Tax Court and Court of Appeals of the Fifth Circuit. Joshua also has extensive experience with tax compliance as it relates to government pension funds and plans.
Joshua joined the Firm in 2008. He received his B.A., summa cum laude, at Fort Hays State University, and J.D., magna cum laude, at the Texas Tech School of Law. He was recently appointed to the board of directors for the FEMAP Foundation, one of the region’s best known multinational charitable organizations that provides support to low-income residents through healthcare, education, outreach and economic development in Cd. Juarez, serves as a member of the Millennial Advisory Board for the Hospitals of Providence System in El Paso, and previously served on the Board of Directors, Executive Committee and as Chapter Counsel for the March of Dimes - El Paso Chapter.
Joshua is the second collegiate graduate and the first to have a doctorate degree in his family. As the son of a hog farmer and a secretary, Joshua grew up understanding the value of hard work. After the death of his mother early in life, Joshua’s father instilled in him the importance of responsibility and a solid work ethic. With each client, Joshua works to embody the values taught by his father. He is married to Carla Canales, and has three dogs and a cat. He is affectionately known around the office as ‘Grumpy Cat’.
